Harrahs South Shore Showroom Information
It’s hard to talk about the South Shore Showroom venue, without talking about Harrah’s Lake Tahoe itself.
Harrah’s Lake Tahoe is a hotel and casino located in Stateline, Nevada. It gets its name from the former owner and operator William F. Hannah is an incredible 18-story tower with 512 rooms and 65,000 sq. ft of casino. This makes it one of the largest resorts in South Lake Tahoe.
History
The Casino was first established when former owner William F. Harrah purchased George’s Gateway Club in January 1955. Harrah’s Lake Club, as it was called, was later opened to the public on June 20, 1955. The following year, Harrah’s Lake Club was sold to Harvey Gross for $5.25 million. At the time this was the most expensive casino purchase ever. Harrah later, in 1958, acquired an interest in the Stateline Country Club and Nevada Club across the street from the old location. And on that site he opened Harrah’s Stateline Club.
And the following year saw the opening of The South Shore Room for a reported cost of $3.5 million. This 750-seat showroom was designed to be an amazing spot of elegance for visitors to the casino and guests of the resort. Its opening act was a show by comedian Red Skellton. Even in those early days, high-quality entertainment was the driving force behind the showroom and its events.
Since then, the casino, resort, and showroom has played host to several big name events. And that includes use for films. For example, in 1962, Curtis Enterprises and Universal-International Pictures filmed 40 Pounds of Trouble inside of Harrah’s Interiors.
This comedy film was about a gambler who died and left his daughter in the care of the casino’s manager. The film made its premiere at Harrah’s South shore Room on January 19, 1963. Portions of Bette Midler’s Jinxed!, was also shot on location in the summer of 1981 for the films 1982 release.
There were always plans to build a hotel at Lake Tahoe, but costs was always a hindering factor. However, in 1971, when Harrah’s went public, Harrah himself had the finances available to build the hotel of his dreams. In 1972, the hotel broke ground on his $25-million establishment. It was later completed and opened its doors to the public on November 9, 1973. Every room was furnished with a fully stocked bar, bay windows, 2 bathrooms with TVs and telephones. The features and amenities of the hotel earned it the first five-star diamond rating in casino history.
